Ok, 
 
So I ran memtest86 from a boot floopy from 12:30 this morning until 1:30 this 
afternoon.  I have run memtest86 in `standard' mode and in `all' mode.  During 
this time memtest86 found no errors whatsever, nothing. 
 
I have checked the md5sum on my gcc tar ball it is ok.  I can find any 
information on gnu.org regarding an md5sum for glibc. 
 
I am once more writing from konwueror in fluxbox, as I have mentioned before 
mozilla seg faults all to regularly from my knoppix cd. 
 
More detailed machine specifications, the machine is not brand new hardware, 
it used to run redhat linux very reliably as the file server for my masters 
thesis.  I have destroyed one Maxtor HDD, about 6 months ago, but I have 
another one installed and it appears to be going ok.

I do get funny messages on knoppix boot like, 
 
ide_scsi: hdc: unsupported command in request queue (0) 
ldm_validate_partition_table(): Disk read failed 
 
hda is my maxtor HDD 
hdb is empty 
hdc is an Iomega Zip 250 
hdd is the CDROM rive I run knoppix from 
 
I assume these messages are the scsi subsystem telling me there is no disk in 
my zip drive, and it is entirely correct. 
 
I am about to try and compile GCC with the side off the computer to see if 
heat is a problem. 
 
Any other suggestions as to why GCC wont compile? 
 
Thanks from a man who is desperately trying to not have to install redhat to 
hdd in order to compile lfs,
