 It diminishes the name of the archive and was:

image="/boot/vmlinuz-generic-2.6.10"
        initrd="/boot/initrd.gz"
        root="/dev/hda1"
        label="Linux"
        read-only

other="/backup/boot/vmlinuz-generic"
        root="/dev/hda5"
        label="BrTn"
        read-only

root at brtn:/backup/boot# lilo
Added Linux *
Added vmlinuz-generic
Syntax error at or above line 44 in file '/etc/lilo.conf'

PS: Line 44 = root="/dev/hda5"

Now it gave problem because of: root="/dev/hda5"

Are you sure, you want /backup/ in the kernel path??

Looking at for the Slackware:
root at brtn:/# ls
backup/  brtn/      etc/      initrd/     man/  proc/  share/  tmp/    var/
bin/     dev/       home/     lfs.tar.gz  mnt/  root/  sys/    tools@
boot/    download/  include/  lib/        opt/  sbin/  t2/     usr/

backup = /dev/hda5 = LFS

Execute ls /backup
root at brtn:/# ls /backup/
bin/   dev/  home/  media/  opt/   root/  sources/  sys/  tools/  var/
boot/  etc/  lib/   mnt/    proc/  sbin/  srv/      tmp/  usr/
root at brtn:/#
